About The English Gold and Enamel Chatelaine Watch
A late 18th-century English verge in a gold and enamel consular case with matching chatelaine. Full-plate fire-gilt fusee movement with round pillars, pierced and engraved cock, silver regulator disc, plain three-arm steel balance, and blue steel hairspring. Restored white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals and gold beetle-and-poker hands, wound through the dial.
The gold and enamel case has blue enamel bezels with white enamel dots imitating split pearls. The back features a restored oval en grisaille painted cartouche of Diana and Cupid, bordered by white enamel dots and translucent green enamel over engine turning.
The matching chatelaine has a gilt clip with gold and champlevé enamel and a large oval cartouche depicting Erato and Cupid, bordered with blue and white champlevé enamel and a green enamel scalloped extension with seven eyelets. Three gold and enamel chains suspend a smaller matching cartouche and a gold spring clip for the watch. Four shorter chains each carry one gold-and-enamel link and a hinged gold spring clip; one clip is missing its cover. Accessories include a small gold flask enamelled en grisaille on both sides with a cameo, a gilt key, and a small carved heart-shaped stone.
Presented in a later black morocco case lined with red velvet.
