A fine early 17th-century French pre-balance spring verge watch in the form of a crucifix, housed in a gilt and rock crystal case. The deep full-plate fire-gilt cruciform movement features pierced and engraved pillars, a fusee and chain with worm-and-wheel barrel on the plate, and a small silver index. The pierced and engraved cock supports a small steel balance without a spring, paired with a later four-wheel going train.
The small teardrop-shaped silver dial is engraved at the center with a cathedral motif above a winged heart, displaying Roman numerals and a single gilt hand. The engraved gilt crucifix-shaped mask has gracefully curved ends. Both halves of the fine rock crystal case are mounted in engraved gilt frames, highlighting the exquisite craftsmanship.
