About The Chronometer by Barraud of Historic Interest
An unusual early 19th-century silver pocket chronometer by Barraud, with notable provenance. Key-wind, full-plate brass fusee movement with blue-steel Harrison maintaining power, Pennington “double-L” compensation balance, and freestanding blue-steel helical hairspring. Earnshaw spring detent escapement visible through an oval aperture, engraved gilt cock with diamond endstone, and fine brass escape wheel with jeweled pivots. White enamel dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds at twelve o’clock, and blued steel hands. Signed and numbered, housed in matching silver pair cases with pendant and bow. Includes original desk stand with brass columns and wooden base, designed to hold the watch in a sprung baize-lined cradle. Accompanied by an 1832 note from watchmaker James Murray recording the chronometer’s rate.
